Uttarayan is one of the most eagerly awaited festivals and is celebrated with much fervor and enthusiasm within the Gujarat community while many visitors from all across the world come especially during this time to witness and participate in the rabid festivities.
People from all about 19 countries- 42 International and 60 National kite flyers participate in the festival. Different types of kites of various sizes will be flown during the festival. Various cultural programmes will also be organized to promote the local culture and tradition of the state. The International Kite Festival is a unique phenomenon, during which the skies over most of the cities at the time of Uttarayan are covered with kites before dawn until the dark hours.
Parents and children set their alarm for 5 AM and start flying kites in the ideal pre-dawn wind, although normally impossible to get there out of bed for other activities.
The day starts in every household women prepare ceremonial delicacies like Til ke Ladoo, Undhyu, Chikki, and Surati Jamun in the kitchen. Shops are closed and everybody is seen on their roofs of the houses in groups, making kite festival doesn’t end with the sun selling famous emojis to the classic Chinese Dragons, every possible shapes and size of kites in vibrant hues fill up the Gujarat sky on this day.
