During the Kanwar Yatra, the devotees of Shiva travel to the Hindu Pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch the holy water of Ganges river. But the Kanwar pilgrimage to Haridwar has grown in recent times to be India’s largest annual religious gathering.

Further, the holy water they collect from river Ganga is used to bath the Shivalingam on Amavasi day in the month of Shravan season.

Highlights of Kanwar Yatra

  • During the Kanwar Yatra, the devotees carry their own Kanwar on both of their shoulders.
  • Most of the devotees do travel on foot from a long distance.
  • Devotees chant the slogan ‘Bol Bam’ or ‘Bam Bhole’ during their whole Kanwar Yatra.
  • During the Kanwar Yatra, devotees donot use charpai or bed to rest during the Yatra.
  • Devotees stay away from the world once they start the Kanwar Yatra.
