The main reason to celebrate the Pushkar Camel Fair is to attract the local camel and cattle traders to do the business around the full moon day according to the Hindu Lunar month of holy Karthik. More than 30,000 camels and cattle will be showcased here for the trading this year. Even a camel beauty contest is organized for all the camel and cattle and the best of all is noted and awarded. Other events include camel racing, camel parade and fairs are also organized along with dancing, folk songs and people gathering a grand bonfire.
Do you know an interesting fact that years ago, the sand dunes of Pushkar used to be covered with up to 50,000 camels but unfortunately the number of camels being sold at the fair has dwindled dramatically through the years? Even the Pushkar fair is incomplete without a huge influx of tourists and locals, but the traders used this as a money-making opportunity which is mainly prepared to be pestered by beggars, gypsies, and kids. Even these are arrangements for hot air balloons to enjoy the exciting scenic views in the early mornings and evenings.
